First, let’s make sure you understand what a long tail keyword is.  Understanding keywords thoroughly is essential to success in making money online through internet marketing.  When people search for things using the search engines like Google, they type things in phrases.  Sometimes they type in short one or two word phrases.  Other times they type in phrases that are very long when they are searching for something.

search-enginesFor instance, a person might type in “used cars” when beginning a search.  Another person might type in “used cars with low mileage in Atlanta Georgia”.  That long eight word phrase would be considered a long tail keyword phrase.

Long tail keywords are the bread and butter for an internet marketer.  In most cases it is going to be way easier for you to get a page to rank really high in the search engines for a long phrase like that then it is going to be to get one to rank for a short phrase like “used cars”.  If you go to Google and compare the search results in both cases you will find that the sites that show up for used cars are going to be very old sites with tons of age, authority, trust and quality inbound links.

Most of them will have the keyword “used cars” in their title for the page that ranks in the search engine results.  If you look at the results for the longtail however, you will notice that there aren’t many if any at all that have all of those keywords for the long tail in the title of the page.  That means if all you did was create a relevant page that used that exact phrase in the title, then you would already have a major advantage over the competition.

You aren’t going to need as many backlinks or other quality factors to get your page to rank high in the SERPs for that long tail.  It will be way easier to succeed in getting that high first page ranking.

This is the whole purpose behind going after those long tail keywords.  Besides that fact, most people are going to search with a long tail anyways.  People are getting increasingly savvy when it comes to finding things on search engines.  They know that they are better off starting their search with a really long, really specific keyword search.  Then if they aren’t satisfied with the search results, they will go back and search again using a slightly different sometimes vaguer search phrase.

The key is to find the most popular and most profitable long tail keywords for your niche.  Then target those.  Build pages that you intend to have ranked high when people search for those phrases. The competition will be a lot easier than targeting a really short keyword phrase.  You will get higher rankings in less time with a lower quality page.  It is way easier to make money this way.
