An awful lot of people who decide to get into the internet marketing business have this vision that they are going to build one website around this idea that they have and achieve massive success with it.  Although I applaud their positive attitude, it is probably best to inject a bit of reality here.  Most people don’t experience that kind of massive success with their first website project.

In fact, your first niche project is far less likely to be a total success because you really don’t understand what you are doing.  There is so much to learn when it comes to internet marketing and building websites that make money.  That first project is going to be a learning process.  You will make mistakes with it.  Some of those mistakes might be critical ones.

Your fist project should be treated as a learning experience.  This is where you get your feet wet and start to really learn what you are doing.  You need to learn how things work online.  Your understanding of it right now is very minimal compared to what it will be in a few months.

The way you should really approach it is to try everything possible to make your first project a success while keeping your eyes open for even better opportunities that will certainly come along.  Once you start to really learn about this business, you will begin recognizing opportunities that you never would have considered before.

You will start to see dollar signs in places that you would never have even considered in the past.  You will realize how much opportunity there really is out there and how silly it was of you to think that your first project was going to be a major success.  You will see how far off you were with those ideas.  You will laugh at how simplistic and misguided your thinking was about that first project.

If you are really going to be successful in the online business world, chances are you won’t see that massive success until you have gotten a few projects under your belt.  Assuming that you are a person who learns from your mistakes, you will build your success up gradually over a period of time.  Some projects will be very successful.  Some will be failures. That is how this business works.

Often times people experience success with a website somewhat unexpectedly.  They think that they are going to make money with their website in one way and then accidently do something that draws massive unexpected attention in a completely unintended fashion.  The smart people then find a way to turn the popularity of that event into a money making endeavor.

Just look at some of the big name bloggers out there.  Most of them will admit that their success was somewhat accidental.  Looking back at it, they now understand why they became successful.  Yet, at the time success happened, they were just struggling to get anyone to notice them at all.  Then there was a “Eureka!” moment.  All of a sudden people were very interested in what they had to say.

The same thing often happens with niche marketers.  They might work on a project with very little faith in its overall success only to be pleasantly surprised months down the road when the site seems to get all kinds of buying traffic.  Then there will be those projects that they really thought were going to be a big hit that ended up being a giant flop.  It happens to everyone.

If you are going to be doing this for a long time and you want to do it as your primary source of income then chances are you are going to have to be involved in a number of projects.  Don’t despair though.  Working on multiple websites is actually more fun than sticking with just one.  It allows you to mix things up and keeps you from getting bored.  Plus it diversifies your income sources so that you aren’t overly reliant on one particular source of income.  That is one of the keys to long term success in this business.  So don’t be afraid to jump into that first project with both feet.  Just make sure you keep an open mind about it and realize that this website probably isn’t going to be the guaranteed massively successful business idea that you thought it would be.
